How I Live Through This - With Anne Roche
Thursday Oct 07, 2021
Thursday Oct 07, 2021
Welcome to How I Live Through This – I’m your host, Anne Roche, and I’m really glad you’re here.
In this season I talk with leaders for change.
Anderson .Paak’s protest song, Lockdown, was my anthem of 2020. But the song also made me dance. And that amazed me. How could I be fighting for justice and dance and sing at the same time? How did Anderson .Paak channel anger and joy in one song? And who else was doing that?
Where could I turn to find not just inspiration, not just motivation, but community? People who were filled with fire and light just like me.
Yes, self-leadership can feel lonely. It’s hard to do the thing that other people aren’t willing to do. But it turns out we’re not alone. There are others showing up to life in extraordinary ways – and getting through hard shit with humor and grace.
Here are some of the people doing just that. Laughing as they lead, dancing as they fight, and allowing generosity to outshine fear.
Join me – let’s live through this, together.
Season 1 drops November 1st 2021.

Leading with Fire & Light with Anne Roche
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
I should have known when I asked a storyteller to let me interview her, she’d insist on hearing my stories as well.
In this opening episode, Bernadette Jiwa turns the tables on me, acts as host, and pulls out all my stories. We talk about weird school lunches, unusual parents, remarkable teachers, and my journey through law, coaching, and activism.
Although Bernadette and I have never met in person, we recognized each other in the online workshop she was leading because we both showed up full of fire and light. We explore what that combination means and the power it has to create lasting change. I talk about how discovering the dance between fire and light led to my current activism and the creation of this podcast. We also discuss the others - those advocating for change, acting on behalf of equity, and dancing as they stay in the fight.
This is my story – join me. Let’s live through this together.

Quiet Leadership with Orpheus Crutchfield
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
I was thrilled my friend Orpheus Crutchfield found time in his hectic travel schedule to talk about leadership. He is a connector of people, a deeply loyal friend, a persistent pursuer of doing good in the world, and in great demand as he travels the world helping independent schools work towards equity and inclusion.
In this episode, Orpheus explores how a childhood experience helped him discover the power – and value – of his quiet leadership. Listen to Orpheus describe his first teaching job at a prestigious all boys school in San Francisco and how, among other things, the friendships he developed there allowed him to continue showing up despite being the first Black man to teach in the school’s history. We discuss why Orpheus has spent 25 years since focused on diversifying independent schools and how empowering others to tap into their own leadership enables him to stay in the dance.

Allied Leadership with Hannah Wright
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
I first met Hannah Wright in the Story Skills Workshop, and again in the Podcasting Workshop. I was inspired by the generous way she showed up in both workshops and by her determined advocacy. She’s led a life of service and recently found her voice to intentionally step into a leadership role as an ally for LBGTQ+ community.
In this episode, we explore how Hannah stepped into the role of an accidental ally, and her discovery that “everyone can make the world better from their own place in the world.” We discuss the value of emotional labor and the wisdom of knowing when to shut up and when to speak up. How does a cis-gendered, heteronormative, straight woman, honor the people she is representing as an ally? Listen to Hannah share her gift of showing what the journey looks like – even when it’s bumpy.

Creatively Exploring Leadership with Jackie Davis
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
I first met Jackie Davis in The Story Skills Workshop where she developed a beautiful story of self-leadership as a young Black girl in a predominately White school. After the workshop, she took that story and turned it into a powerful performance on a national stage. With an impressive background in marketing and business, Jackie is currently reinventing herself as a professional speaker and storyteller. She shares stories about her personal life experiences to inspire women to step into their greatness and be seen and heard.
In this episode, listen along as Jackie talks about defining moments in her life and discovers the thread of being a creative explorer throughout. What does leadership mean? As a life-long learner, Jackie gives her unique interpretation and discusses how she shows up – without knowing how it’ll end – by focusing on what she can control.

Aligned Leadership with Orlando Bishop
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
Orlando Bishop wears many hats – among others, he’s a podcaster, coach, producer, and a stand up comedian. His wisdom is coupled with laughter and I always leave a conversation with him having learned a lot and laughed even more.
In this episode, listen to Orlando talk about his ADHD diagnosis late in life and how coping skills he developed as a child serve as trusty tools he relies on to this day. He’s a fan of leaning into the things that come naturally and gaining clarity around one’s “why” as a way to stay grounded. We laughed often but also got serious about how to show ourselves the grace we give our clients. What really lights up Orlando? Whether through his films, his stand up, his podcast, or his one on one coaching, Orlando’s goal is to help you do you… better.

Mission Based Leadership with Jenn Campbell
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
How does a former Navy pilot work toward a 100-year goal of No More War? By believing in the pure goodness and unlimited potential of others – and empowering others to believe in themselves.
Meet Jennifer Campbell. Jenn and I first met through a mutual connection and we bonded immediately over our need to call bullshit and our desire to serve a mission bigger than our lifetime. She’s been through fires of combat, entrepreneurship, the very premature birth of her child, and divorce, but by using the Greek virtue of Arete, she guides herself and others toward living to one’s fullest potential.
Hear how taking a Myers Briggs test during her time in the Navy helped Jenn recognize that she could lead from her heart more successfully than when leading from her head. We discuss the importance of passion to wake up leadership in self – no matter when it arises. And Jen shares a deeply personal – and powerful – story about how trying and failing means she’s still in the fight.

Dream Leadership with Sonya Denyse
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
Getting a chance to talk with Sonya Denyse is one of my favorite pastimes – and this conversation was no different.
What happens if “no” means “not yet”? Hear how being connected to play allowed Sonya to grow up living in a space of possibility despite a lack of resources. We discuss the dream killers and the gift of joy; the differences between raw and cultivated talent; and inspiring action versus inspiring shame in difficult conversations.
Sonya tells a powerful personal story about how being able to see a dream, convey it to others, and create the support around bringing that dream into reality, directly impacted the lives of those around her in an extraordinary way. We also explore the reality of duality – and how when anger mutes the music and you can’t find the dance, remembering that leadership is not about who’s in front of you, it’s about who’s beside you.

Getting it Done Leadership with Stevie Lee
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
Stevie Lee is one of a kind – often described as the “glue”, he’s a connector, a visionary, a politician for good. The Executive Director at Horizon Community School at Marin City and the Director of Diversity and Inclusion at Marin Horizon School* in Mill Valley, California, Stevie blends worlds by stepping into his power as a mover and a shaker.
Listen to Stevie talk about lessons he learned as a young man coaching sports in Marin City and how his leadership style developed by helping people see the potential they have in themselves and celebrating the little victories. How does Stevie Lee define leadership? Hear him share his idea of leadership as seeing what needs to be done and doing it, how sometimes going rogue is necessary, and the difference between collaboration and partnership.
We talk about being focused on the mission and staying true to personal values as a way to create transformational leadership – especially when creating equitable education. Find out how Stevie uses this clarity to define the past 40 years not as work, but rather as “the thing I’m supposed to be doing”.

Leading with Love with Bernadette Jiwa
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
Sunday Oct 31, 2021
I was so honored and excited to speak to my friend, mentor, inspiration – Bernadette Jiwa – that I forgot to welcome her to the show. We had technical issues soon after we began the interview and, even though I got the chance to re-do my introduction, I failed a second time to say hello.
But this is the magic of Bernadette. Every time we speak, we dive right into the deep end. There’s no shallow end of the pool for us. And since I carry Bernadette in my heart at all times, I forgot to welcome her into a space I feel she inhabits constantly.
So in we jumped.
We talked about the many ways in life we show up as leaders outside of professional roles – as wives, daughters, sisters, mothers – and how leading with love creates a fierceness, a power in leadership.
Love leads all of Bernadette’s stories – from her childhood in Ireland to her life as a writer in Australia. We explore how helping others discover their own stories, and therefore the leadership of themselves through their stories, is work we feel privileged and honored to do in Bernadette’s Story Skills Workshop. Listen as Bernadette shares beautiful personal family stories exploring themes of agency, starting without knowing the outcome, and beginning everything from a place of love.
